Earth Day is April 22nd – What Can You Do to be More Earth Smart?

Earth Day, held every year on April 22nd is the day set aside to remind ourselves about what needs to be done to protect the earth. But did you know that the beginning of this special day actually began as a protest movement in 1970?

Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator and conservationist from Wisconsin, was concerned about what was happening to our earth. He and his senate staffers organized the first national Earth Day celebration in April of 1970. It was estimated that upwards of 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day’s peaceful demonstrations across the United States.

Now, with the rise of the “green” movement, more people are aware that we as individuals can in our own small way help to save the earth by being aware of things we do just going about our daily lives.

Here are some things that you, your family and friends can do to be more earth smart:

  • Reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Get a home energy audit to find out where your home could use energy more efficiently and plug those energy leaks
  • Use alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power
  • Replace your incandescent bulbs with CFLs, which last 10 times longer, use 2/3 less energy and give off 70% less heat
  • Drive less, bike or walk more
  • Drive more fuel efficient vehicles
  • Plant lots of trees
  • Grow an organic garden
  • Use less water
  • Use less plastics
  • Use reusable bags
  • Buy locally

If each person can do their part to make every day…Earth Day, then we will indeed be saving the earth and keeping it beautiful, healthy and green for the generations to come.
