Will 20 Minutes in My Hot Tub Really Matter?

Soaking in warm jetted water is oftentimes seen as being a luxury. But did you know that a 20-minute soak session in a hot tub is much more than just a luxurious treat to yourself? It’s actually good for your health and wellbeing!

Researchers Dr. Doreen Stiskal of Seton Hall University in New Jersey and Dr. Bruce Becker from Washington State University have studied the effects of warm water immersion therapy on individuals for a number of years.

Their conditions required bathers to remain in the tubs with water temperatures ranging from 94 degrees F to 102 degrees F for anywhere from 20 to 24 minutes. Here is what they, and other researchers, have discovered throughout the years:

Hot Tubs Offer Ongoing Pain Relief

Because water is buoyant, it significantly reduces the pressurizing effects of gravity on the muscles and joints of arthritis sufferers. As a result, those with arthritis and other joint or ligament conditions have less pain and are more comfortable after a 20-minute soak in a hot tub.

Hot Tubs Calm Your Nerves

Dr. Becker’s research found that soaking in warm water for approximately 20 minutes has a similar effect on the nervous system as meditation does. Some of these effects include:

  • Reduction in stress levels
  • Promotion of self-reflection and emotional balance
  • Reduction in anxiety

Because of the relaxing effects of soaking in a tub, a number of other positive benefits follow suit, including improved quality and duration of sleep, better self-confidence, and an improved overall sense of personal well-being.

Hot Tubs Boost Cardiovascular Health

Immersing your body in warm water all the up to your neck means giving your body a great cardiac workout without having to hit the pavement or the treadmill. Water puts pressure on your body which increases your cardiac volume and forces your heart to naturally work harder and become stronger.

Research provided by Thomas Allison, M.P.H., PhD and published by the Mayo Clinic, further confirmed that sitting in warm water is great for your heart. According to his study, sitting in a hot tub can lower your blood pressure, reducing your risk of suffering from heart disease or hypertension.
