America’s first responders are always there when we need them. Within minutes of calling 911 you will hear the siren of either the police, firefighters, or the paramedics coming to you. And we certainly appreciate all that first responders do for us. This October 28, we recognize our first responders for National First Responders Day, celebrating the heroic men and women who sometimes walk into literal fires and other dangers to save our lives.

Wellness Tips for First Responders

In order to take care of other people as they so often do, it’s important that first responders also take care of themselves — physically and mentally. That’s where wellness comes in. Wellness is defined as the act of being aware of what constitutes a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle for you, and actively pursuing it. While this can mean so many things for different people, we’re going to focus on hot tubs and saunas and how they can help first responders do more than just relax.

1. Stress Reduction

Chronic stress can lower your immune system and make you susceptible to a host of infections and diseases. Besides our U.S. military, few professions are under as much stress as being a first responder. Even emergency room doctors and nurses, given our current climate in a pandemic, are experiencing higher levels of stress than usual. Stress is certainly a huge threat to your health, and it’s imperative to provide yourself with an outlet to help reduce it when possible.

The current wildfires on the West Coast have scorched more than 3.4 million acres of land and killed at least 26 people including one firefighter. Firefighters have been wrestling with the flames for so long and have been inhaling dangerous toxins that their bodies need a break.

Soaking in a hot tub is known to offset negative experiences or pain and can help you focus on your wellbeing. We recommend all firefighters get a good soak for at least 20 minutes to calm their nerves and relieve the stress.

2. Relief From Pain and Cramps

You think carrying that huge gear and sometimes people out of burning buildings is easy? What about the police officers who chase bad guys all day or the paramedics who still have to carry people and more?

After long shifts, first responders need to be able to relax their muscles and joints. The effects of a good soak in a hot tub can be better than a Swedish massage. Just slide into the water, close your eyes, and allow the buoyancy of the water to relieve your aches and pains.

3. Mental Relaxation

This is especially true for saunas. Sitting in a sauna is an excellent way to unwind after a tough day. The good news is you don’t have to wait until the end of the day for this as you can start your day off right and in a good mental space by taking a 10-minute sauna bath before heading out for your shift. Chances are you will be more in tune with your inner self, allowing you to be more focused throughout your shift.

4. Detoxifying

Saunas and hot tubs can help you detox. The heat and warmth can and will increase your core body temperature causing you to sweat. The more you sweat in these relaxing environments, the more likely you are to expel some of these toxins you are exposed to on a daily basis through your pores. But be sure to hydrate your system well during these soaks as they can cause you to dehydrate.
