Hot Tub Water Care

When do you drain a hot tub?
There are a few answers to this question. The standard industry recommendation is every two to four months. But the truth is that the frequency varies based on how much you use the hot tub, the hardness of your water, the model of your hot tub, and how well you maintain your water levels. The majority of hot tubs should be drained every 50-90 days, but an eco-friendly HotSpring® model might need to be drained every 120-180 days.

How is bromine different from chlorine?
Both bromine and chlorine are sanitizers that work to eliminate algae and bacteria. Bromine is less harsh smelling and less harsh on the skin, but chlorine lasts longer because it does not break down as easily from sunlight.

Why is my hot tub water cloudy?
Hot tub water becomes cloudy for a few reasons. First, check your filter(s) to make sure it’s clean and filtering particles efficiently. It’s possible the particles in the water just aren’t filterable. Second, check your water levels. Unbalanced water levels may make the water cloudy. Third, add sanitizer to the hot tub water. Calcium hardness and contaminants can make the water cloudy too.

Why is the water discolored or filled with white flakes?
Too much of certain minerals (copper, iron, magnesium, and iron) will discolor the water or produce white flakes within the water (also called scale deposits). Check and properly adjust the water’s pH level to prevent discoloration.

How do I get rid of scum lines?
Scum on the surface of the water results from body oil and lotion build-up. Use an enzyme cleaner to keep scum lines under control.

What are the water levels I should follow?
pH: 7.2 to 7.8ppm

Total Alkalinity: 80-120ppm

Calcium Hardness: 150-400ppm

Total Dissolved Solids: 2000ppm

Sanitizer: 3-5ppm (never over 10ppm)

How do I stop hot tub water from foaming?
Soaps and detergents can cause foam.  Large foam bubbles usually are a result of detergents from your bathing suits.  Small bubbles usually are a result of shampoo and conditioners.  If the problem persists purchase our spa guard Anti-Foam and follow instructions on the bottle.  “Anti-Foam quickly eliminates and prevents foaming in Hot Tubs and Swimming Pools.”
